It will be good to have your mobile phone with you to contact your travel-mates via the local mobile networks. It will be much cheaper.

How it works? Simple.

1. Bring along your GSM mobile phone to Hong Kong

2. Once you touch down in Hong Kong International Airport, look for a convenience store – 7-Eleven / Circle K.

3. Purchase a Prepaid SIM Card – Always get the one that can make international calls – an economical way to call home.

4. Take note of your own prepaid phone number.

5. Insert the SIM card into your phone and follow simple instructions from the package.

If you have used up all your phone card credits, just simply purchase a TOP-UP card (Take note of your mobile network company) from any convenience store and top-up your phone credits.

You can access free internet at some coffee shops with a drink purchase, for instance from Starbucks or Pacific Coffee Company, free WiFi Access are also offered by some large shopping malls, major MTR stations and public libraries.

Personally, I think that accessing the internet in Hong Kong is not as convenient as yet. There is still much room for improvements. The only place I find it encouraging is the free WiFi internet access in the Hong Kong International Airport, HKIA.

Recently, the Hong Kong Government introduced free WiFi Hotspots near the government departments & public libraries. Good effort… but as a tourist, that doesn’t help us much at this point in time. This project will take about 5 years to complete. We do look forward to seeing Hong Kong with full WiFi Access coverage.
