Hong Kong Travel Guide from a local perspective

MTR-Mass Transit Railway

MTR is the most common and convenient means of travel within Hong Kong. As there are more cars on the road each day, underground transportation is becoming increasingly popular among local HongKongers.

The MTR system is very well developed and connects to other forms of public transport very well, e.g. Buses, Minivans, Light Rail, Train ( KCR ). It operates everyday from about 6am ( first train from terminal ) to last train at about 12 midnight. Train arrivals are around 4-5 minutes and shorter during rush-hour.

As MTR is the most popular public transport in Hong Kong, it is quite rare that you will find vacant seating on the train. So be prepared to stand throughout your journey. Certain seats are allocated to elderly and handicapped people, so do look out for them to avoid staring eyes.

Payment of the transportation fee is mainly by OCTOPUS or you can purchase a ticket at one of the MTR ticketing machines.

You will be able to find a detailed local map ( 2 kilometre radius ) inside any MTR station. That will be useful especially when you are looking for a particular street or building.

Another pointer to take note is that most of the entrances are interlinked to each other without going through the “GATE”, so the MTR station also works as an underground passage, avoiding the hot sun and rain.

If you get yourself lost in the MTR station, do not hesitate to approach any MTR staff. They are courteous and helpful.
