Communication in Hong Kong

The most common language or dialect spoken in Hong Kong is Cantonese. (A southern Chinese dialect).
Hong Kong used to be a British Colony and the use of English is very common. Most Hongkongers can speak and write basic English. You should not find any difficulty communicating in English in hotels, shopping malls and restaurants.
There has been an influx of foreign workers in Hong Kong in the recent years and they mainly from Mainland China. You may encounter some difficulties communicating with them in the local shops and coffee houses. But you don’t have to worry too much, you can always point with your fingers and bargain on a calculator!
